Tips for a Successful MCAT Test Day- Part 2 Planning for the Best

A few days ago, I wrote on Preparing for the Worst on Test Day. The flipside to preparing for the worst is planning for success. This is the significantly more fun aspect of MCAT planning. As an incentive to work hard and dedicate countless hours of your life (actually 300 or so) to MCAT studying, you should plan for success and thus a celebration post-MCAT.

One of the main reasons that you should have something fun planned is so that if you have a rogue moment during your test when you are stressed out and questioning your decision to take the MCAT, you can think, “Yes. This passage is not the most fun, but in two hours, I will be doing. . .” Now the real question is, what fun activity do you put in place of the ellipses?

Here are some ideas for activities/goals when relaxing post-MCAT success

  1. Immediately cease worrying about the test. It’s now complete! Post-test is not the time to analyze every question you believe you missed and stress about forgetting an important equation. It’s over and you’re not getting your score for at least four weeks so relax and stop worrying about the test.

  2. Take a nap. Seriously. Taking the MCAT can be a physically, mentally and emotionally draining experience so treat yourself to some time to rest your brain and recharge.

  3. Do something frivolous. Chances are that you have been using every free moment up until the test to do something productive and worthwhile like studying or doing laundry. Take some time to do something totally unproductive. Suggestions include- watching trashy reality TV, having a movie marathon, reading a magazine or book for fun, catching up on your Facebook creeping or checking out #2 and taking a substantial nap.

  4. Spend time with friends/family. Who better to help you celebrate with a post-MCAT dinner or hang out session than the people who have been supporting you throughout your MCAT journey? Catch up with these nice people and enjoy the freedom that comes with not having to discuss which formulas you recently reviewed or how ready you feel for your test.

Overall, just make sure to have fun. Don’t plan on doing important things like moving apartments, taking midterms or writing huge papers. For one night, at least, celebrate your rocking completion of the MCAT! ...read more
