MCAT Question of the Week! Immunology

MCAT Immunology question of the week

Great work on this week’s MCAT question focused on Immunology! Stay tuned next week for a special holiday themed question!

Both the humoral response and the cellular response are specific immune responses which eliminates (A). Choice (B) is the correct answer! The humoral response is directed against antigens that have not yet entered body cells, while the cellular response is directed against pathogens that have entered body cells. Choice (C) is incorrect, because both the humoral response and the cellular response result in the formation of memory cells. Choice (D) is false, since the humoral response involves the production of …

Dr. Josh Question of the Week! – Transcription Factors

MCAT Question of Day Protein

The correct answer choice here is D. This is a question that we don’t want to OVERthink. From the question stem you know that the transcription factors will bind to nucleic acids. This means that SP1 will bind to both DNA and RNA. So all you need to do to answer this question correctly is figure out which organelle does NOT contain DNA or RNA.

(A) rRNA synthesis occurs in the nucleoli and SP1 would be found there.

(B) Mitochondrial DNA must replicate and SP1 would be fuond there.

(C) SP1 would be found in ribosomes since they are …

What is Medicine? Musings from my Second Medical School Block

DNA- Molecules to Medicine- KaplanHello my studious readers! I’ve recently started my second medical school block which is named “Molecules to Medicine” or M2M for short. In this block, we have a couple of different subunits that focus on specific topics such as Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cell Physiology and Epidemiology.

What that amounts to is spending many hours each day learning about signal transduction cascades, mutations that cause extremely rare genetic conditions, the composition of the cell membrane, and the Biostatistics behind epidemiological analysis. It’s interesting because it’s such a large shift from the sheer memorization that was required to do well in anatomy. …

First Med School Test Freakout!

Human AnatomyHello my persistent MCAT students! This week I had quite the adventure. I took my first tests of medical school and it seems that I have lived to tell about it. I’ll fill you in on a few details of the format, so you have an idea about the roller coaster of examinations I just completed. After three weeks of learning all of the muscles, bones, arteries and nerves of the back and extremities, I took a three-day long exam to ensure that I actually learned something.

Here’s the schedule:
Monday- A dissection lab quiz and an online clinical quiz
