The joys of being FLEXible: A Guide to Flex Sessions

Flex Sessions MCATHello my flexible MCAT students! As you may have seen, there are ever more flex sessions being offered through your Kaplan syllabus. For those of you who may not have access to a Kaplan syllabus, flex sessions are online interactive sessions that you can access throughout your MCAT course.
There are some flex sessions which are required for completion of the course such as the MCAT strategy (MSCT) sessions and the organic chemistry sessions. There are also optional sessions designed to complement the class and give you extra exposure to difficult or high yield material.
So, you may ask, why is this a blog-worthy topic today? Well, I want to talk about Flex sessions because I love them and I’m not ashamed to proclaim my FlexLove from the rooftops. I also think that students realize too late in their programs the true value of the flex sessions and I want to nudge you into joining my FlexLove party sooner rather than later. Sidebar, if there’s a reader who is more Twitter savvy than I, we should try making #FlexLove into a thing.
So here’s why rocking the Flex Sessions is an awesome way to augment your in-class experience:
1. Flexible scheduling- as busy pre-med students I know that there are never enough hours in your day. Believe me, I get it. The flex sessions take place on weekdays, weekends, afternoons, evenings, mornings and not necessarily at the same time as your class session. It’s handy to know that there are lots of flex sessions running which means that while you may not be able to make it to the Thermodynamics session this week, there’s one that will fit perfectly in your schedule next week.
2. Time to break it down- There are some topics on the MCAT that are notoriously tricky for students, such as the kidney. It’s always difficult in class when my students are struggling to understand a topic and we, unfortunately, have to move on to cover other high yield material. The flex sessions offer an opportunity to really delve into material that simply can’t be done justice in 10-15 minutes during class.
3. Multiple exposures- One of the best ways to move something into your long-term memory is through multiple exposures. By reading the Review Notes, attending class, completing the Topical tests AND attending a flex session, you gain another exposure to help cement a concept into your brain.
4. Access to awesome teachers- If you take an on-site course, you have one instructor available as a resource. Online courses give you access to a couple of instructors. By attending a few flex sessions, you have access to dozens of rockin’ MCAT instructors. In addition to the teacher who is on-screen, there are also multiple teachers who are not on camera, but are there simply to answer your questions. How neat is that?
5. The potential to hang out with me- This one is pretty self-explanatory, but if you are ever in a flex session and you see that a girl named Emily is one of your teachers for the evening, chances are that you’re talking to me.
